Personal learning log
Personal learning log (formerly mandatory teaching log)
What is the personal learning log (formerly mandatory teaching log)?
Please note: the personal learning log was previously named mandatory teaching log.
Foundation doctors (FDs) must log a minimum of 60 hours (during 12 months pro-rata) of learning during their FY1 and their FY2 rotation. At least 30 hours (during 12 months pro-rata) must be core foundation teaching.
The FD is responsible for ensuring they log the minimum number of learning hours in their e-portfolio. If there are concerns regarding engagement, the FTPD/T should discuss this with the FSD.
Statutory and mandatory training, induction sessions and ILS/ALS/equivalent cannot contribute to the 60 hours.
A maximum of 6 hours (10%) of e-learning can contribute to the 60 hours.
Horus counts the number of hours (core, non-core and total) logged, visible to all users with access to the relevant FD's account.
These counts are also shown on the summary of evidence report and administrators will be able to report on their whole cohort.
Further guidance on the personal learning log is on the UKFPO website.

If you are a foundation doctor: Contact your local Horus ePortfolio administrator (this will usually be your local postgraduate centre administrator).
If you are a postgraduate centre administrator: Contact your local foundation school administrator.
If you are a foundation school administrator: Contact your local foundation school manager/director.

Does personal learning need to be verified by an administrator before it is added to the personal learning log?
Personal learning does not need to be verified by an administrator. When a foundation doctor creates and completes a personal learning form it is automatically added to the log and total learning hours are calculated accordingly. The total amount of hours logged will often be cross-checked against trust records though.
Can I log completed e-LfH modules as part of my personal learning?
Yes, completed e-LfH modules can be added to your personal learning log (a maximum of 6 hours counts).
There are two ways to log completed e-LfH modules:
A) Directly from your list of completed e-LfH modules (if you have linked your Horus account to your e-LfH account)
- Portfolio > e-LfH
- Select 'Add' in the "Add to teaching log" column next to the required e-LfH module
- Follow steps 3-6 here (please check the accuracy of any pre-populated fields)
B) As a general learning log (if you haven't linked your Horus account to your e-LfH account)
Any other e-learning can be logged in this same way.

Do teaching hours logged during a FiY1 placement count towards the minimum amount needed for F1?
Whilst mandatory teaching during a FiY1 placement is considered valuable towards your foundation training, the hours logged do not count towards the minimum amount of hours needed during F1. This will be reflected in the mini reports on the mandatory teaching log overview page and the portfolio overview page.
Please note that whilst the mini reports mentioned above have been updated to reflect this change, the mandatory teaching log form count report has not and will show all teaching hours logged during an F1 year (including any FiY1 placements).
